Gimcheon Sangmu defeated Pohang Steelers and regained second place.

Gimcheon (CEO Bae Nak-ho) defeated Pohang 3-0 in the 37th round of Hana Bank K League 1 2024 held at Pohang Steel Yard at 2 p.m. on the 10th. With this win, Gimcheon beat Gangwon FC and regained second place.

Gimcheon started the game with a 4-3-3 formation. Dong-heon Kim wore the goalkeeper gloves. The defensive line was formed by Park Dae-won, Park Chan-yong, Park Seung-wook, and Park Soo-il. Kim Bong-soo, Seo Min-woo, and Lee Dong-kyung were in the midfield, while Kim Seung-seop, Park Sang-hyuk, and Mo Jae-hyeon were the starters in the front line.

Before the game started, Coach Jeong Jeong-yong mentioned the importance of this game. Coach Jeong expressed his firm determination for victory, saying, “The rankings may change with today’s game. As we continue to compete for second place, I will give joy to the fans with a victory.”

At the beginning of the first half, Gimcheon struggled with Pohang’s forward pressure, but Seo Min-woo opened the scoring with a mid-range shot and gradually brought the momentum back. Afterwards, there were several opportunities to attack as the two teams were fiercely competing for leadership, but Pohang’s tight defense gap prevented detailed attacks from being carried out easily.

In the 16th and 24th minutes of the first half, Lee Dong-kyung attempted two mid-range shots. Although it missed the goal, attempts to draw out Pohang’s defense continued. In the 38th minute of the first half, Park Soo-il joined the attack and attempted a powerful shot.

Gimcheon made an early move by bringing in Kim Gyeong-jun at the start of the second half. As soon as Kim Gyeong-jun came on as a substitute, he attempted a shot and cleared the score. Starting with Kim Gyeong-jun’s shot, Pohang was pushed hard.

The first goal was finally scored in the 2nd minute of the second half. On the right side, Mo Jae-hyun’s cross after a solo dribble was passed by Kim Seung-seop to Lee Dong-kyung. Lee Dong-kyung then calmly pushed in with his right foot to take a 1-0 lead. This was Lee Dong-kyung’s 12th league goal this season.

Gimcheon, who had completely gained momentum with the first goal, stepped up efforts to score additional goals. In the 5th minute of the second half, Lee Dong-kyung attempted to score an additional goal with a free kick taken from the right side, but unfortunately it hit the post. Soon after, an additional goal came to alleviate the disappointment. In the 7th minute of the second half, Lee Dong-kyung beat a defender in front of Pohang’s penalty box and fired a shot. Lee Dong-kyung’s shot went directly in front of the goalkeeper, but Seo Min-woo pushed the ball in and succeeded in scoring an additional point, widening the gap to 2 points.

The best defense was offense. With the score 2-0, they could have switched to defense, but instead they strengthened their offense and scored an additional goal. In the 26th minute of the second half, Mo Jae-hyun received a pass from behind and crossed, and Kim Seung-seop, who was rushing, finished with a direct shot, widening the gap to 3-0.

Goalkeeper Kim Dong-heon’s performance was also dazzling. In the 28th minute of the second half, Pohang’s mid-distance shot was deflected and flew into the corner of the goal, but they showed a superb save. Even in the corner kick that followed, they blocked the opponent’s header and did not allow a goal. In the extra time given for 5 minutes, Kim Min-deok found the net, but it was canceled for offside, and the game ended 3-0 with no additional goals, and Gimcheon succeeded in reclaiming second place.

Gimcheon is preparing for the last home game of the season in the 38th round of Hana Bank K League 1 2024 against FC Seoul, which will be held at Gimcheon Sports Complex at 2 p.m. on the 23rd.
