AFP reported on the 26th (Korean time) that the uniform worn by ‘American professional baseball legend’ Babe Ruth when he hit a ‘predicted home run’ broke the highest ever auction price for sporting goods.
AFP quoted Heritage Auctions, the auction organizer, saying, “The bidding price for the uniform Ruth wore as a member of the New York Yankees soared to $13.3 million (approximately 18.4 billion won), including commission,” and “This is 12.6 million won in August 2022.” “That’s more than the price of a Mickey Mantle baseball card sold for a dollar.”
The uniform up for auction was the one Ruth wore against the Chicago Cubs in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series, during which Ruth hit the famous ‘pre-emptive home run’.
The auction continues until August 24th, and experts predict that the price of the uniform could soar to $30 million.
The previous highest price for sports clothing was the uniform worn by Michael Jordan in Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals, which was sold for $10.1 million at a Sotheby’s auction in September 2022.
