Goyang Sono coach Kim Seung-gi, who was embroiled in controversy over assault after throwing a towel at a player, voluntarily resigned on the 22nd. The Sono club announced on the 22nd, “Coach Seung-gi Kim apologized for causing concern to professional basketball fans and conveyed to the club his intention to resign in order to reform the team’s atmosphere.”

Coach Kim Seung-gi is known to have thrown a towel while reprimanding a Sono player in the locker room during a visiting game against Seoul SK on the 10th. The towel was wet with sweat and hit the athlete’s face. After its own investigation, the club requested the Korea Basketball League (KBL) to hold a financial committee on the 20th.

Coach Kim led the Anyang KGC Ginseng Corporation (now CheongKwanJang) to a combined championship in the 2016-2017 season and the championship in the 2021-2022 season. For the first time in domestic professional basketball, he experienced victory as a player, coach, and manager.

The Sono club announced, “We are looking for a replacement leader due to the voluntary resignation of coach Seung-gi Kim, and we plan to appoint one as soon as possible.”
