(Sports Seoul | Reporter Jeong Da-wo) Heo Jung-moo, former chairman of Daejeon Hana Citizen, is running for election as president of the Korea Football Association.

Former Chairman Heo said in a phone call with this paper on the 18th, “I have decided to run for the presidential election,” and added, “Isn’t the situation in Korean soccer more difficult than ever? On behalf of soccer players, I want to lead changes in Korean soccer. “Currently, many soccer players are helping.”

Former Chairman Heo continued, “I will probably reveal my detailed position through an official press conference on the 21st. We are currently looking for a location. “I will use that opportunity to talk in detail about what I think,” he added.

Former Chairman Heo is a soccer player representing Korean soccer. During his active career, he played in 104 international matches for the national team, scoring 30 goals, and also had experience playing for the prestigious Dutch team PSV Eindhoven.

After retirement, he was also active as a leader. Starting with the Pohang Steelers, he worked as a manager for the Jeonnam Dragons and Incheon United, and served as the head coach at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, leading the team to advance to the round of 16 for the first time.

He also has extensive administrative experience. He has accumulated a variety of experiences, including serving as vice president of the Korea Football Association, vice president of the Korea Professional Football League, and chairman of the board of directors of Daejeon Hana Citizen.

Former Chairman Heo was born on January 13, 1955. Since the election is held on January 8th, there is no problem with running for office according to the regulations. According to the regulations, only those under the age of 70 as of election day can run.

Chairman Chung Mong-gyu has not yet clearly announced whether he will run for a fourth term. While he is expected to run for office, he must receive approval from the Korea Sports Council’s Sports Fair Committee to run for election.

Public opinion toward Chairman Chung is more negative than ever. The current head, Chairman Chung, is in a desperate situation amid criticism not only from within the association, but also from soccer people and even politicians. Former Chairman Heo’s declaration of candidacy to block Chairman Chung’s bid for a fourth term could be a variable in the election. weo@sportsseoul.com
