(Sports Seoul | Reporter Bae Joo-geun) On the 12th (Korean time), the BBWAA (Baseball Writers Association of America) announced the finalists for the Cy Young Award, Rookie of the Year, and Manager of the Year along with MVPs from both the National League (NL) and American League (AL). Three people were announced.

The MVP candidates attracting the most attention include Shohei Ohtani (LAD), who is likely to win unanimous votes in the National League (NL), Francisco Lindor (New York Mets), and Ketel Marte (Arizona).

The three American League (AL) MVP candidates are Aaron Judge, Juan Soto (New York Yankees), and Bobby Witt Jr. (Kansas City Royals). The AL is also interested in Judge being unanimously named MVP.

However, there is a group of candidates that attract attention for another reason. He is a candidate for the NL Manager Award. The list includes New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, San Diego manager Mike Shildt, and Milwaukee manager Putt Murphy.

Coach Mendoza led the Mets to the NLCS for the first time in nine years. Coach Silt obtained tickets to the fall festival in San Diego for the first time in two years. As soon as Coach Murphy took office this year, he led Milwaukee to the NL Central League championship and was nominated.

However, World Series (WS) winning coach Dave Roberts is not on the list. Local news such as MLB.com and Dodgenation analyze Manager Roberts’ exclusion for the following several reasons.

First of all, I heard that the Manager Award is based on regular league performance, so winning the WS is not included. And the three candidates for the Coach Award were evaluated as having contributed greatly to the team’s growth. The BBWAA has a strong tendency to evaluate coaches based on player depth.

In that extension, the Dodgers’ abundant power and player base are a minus for Manager Roberts.

The BBWAA believed that the Dodgers could have succeeded if a manager other than Manager Roberts had taken charge of the Dodgers. In other words, it means that the Dodgers won the championship due to the players rather than Roberts’ leadership.

Nonetheless, this year Coach Roberts had the best season of his career. In particular, in the postseason, despite the imbalance on the mound, the team overcame difficulties through efficient pitching management. kenny@sportsseoul.com
